Meet Ghostwriter, an AI-powered typewriter that talks
The present meets the past: An AI-powered typewriter that can talk to you is called "Ghostwriter." Designer and engineer Arvind Sanjeev from Kochi, Kerala, has made a typewriter that can talk to the person typing on it using artificial intelligence (AI).
Arvind Sanjeev, a designer and engineer, shared on Wednesday how he made his one-of-a-kind typewriter, which is called Ghostwriter. It communicates with the person who is typing by employing artificial intelligence. The large language model ChatGPT is powered by OpenAI's GPT-3. The machine resembles a phantom communicating, which is why the model name includes the word "ghost."
Sanjeev used a 1990s electric typewriter called Brother AX-325 to create Ghostwriter. He reverse-engineered the keyboard signals before feeding them into an Arduino, a popular low-cost microcontroller. Finally, it transmits signals to a Raspberry Pi, which serves as the OpenAI GPT-3 API's network interface. In addition, when the GPT-3 responds, the Ghostwriter automatically types on the paper using the output noises of this AI model. GPT-3 functions as a chatbox. It includes assistance with poetry and writing assignments.
While Sanjeev was tinkering with the machine, he realized that GTP's creative temperature and response time needed to be regulated. As a result, he added two knobs and an OLED status screen above the keyboard. Using custom-colored gray, cream, and orange paint, he gave the machine a dramatic appearance. He wants to have a significant impact on how humans and AI interact.

Sanjeev wrote on Twitter, "The idea for Ghostwriter came in early 2021, inspired by Rob Sloan's Sci-Fi writer," but "it was difficult to squeeze time from my full-time role at @Lumen_world, so I have been slowly spending my weekends working on this." The tweet read, "The idea for Ghostwriter came in early 2021." He added, "I wanted to create a mindful intervention that allows you to take a moment to breathe and reflect on the new creative relationship we are forming with machines," in his writing. He continued, "The calm meditative interface of a vintage typewriter takes us on an emotional journey through paper and ink and removes all digital distractions." He tweeted about his experience in a thread.
