Nikki Haley, a 51-year-old former South Carolina governor, declared, "I'm running for president.

Charleston, United States
: Nikki Haley, a former US ambassador to the United Nations, announced on Tuesday that she will challenge fellow Republican Donald Trump for the presidency in 2024 by proposing a "new generation" of Washington leaders.
In a video statement, the 51-year-old former South Carolina governor and Indian immigrant's daughter declared, "I'm Nikki Haley and I'm running for president."

In the video, which was shot in the South Carolina town of Bamberg, where she was born, she said, "It's time for a new generation of leadership -- to rediscover fiscal responsibility, secure our border, and strengthen our country, our pride, and our purpose."
Haley had been teasing a "big announcement" on February 15 and casting herself as a younger, fresher alternative to the 76-year-old former president Trump.

In the end, she declared her intentions to run for president a day early—on Valentine's Day.

In her video, Haley highlighted her personal history as a means of uniting a nation strained by racial tensions. She is presenting herself as a changemaker who is able to reenergize a party and country that, according to her, have lost their way in recent years.

"I was a proud daughter of immigrants from India. White, not black. She stated, "I was different," in the video.

"However, your job is to focus on the similarities, not the differences, as my mother would always say."

She went on to say, "Some look at our past as evidence that the founding principles of America are bad."

They assert that the promise of freedom is fabricated. Some people believe that our ideas are not only wrong but also racist and evil. The opposite is absolutely true."

It is unlikely that Haley will be the last Republican to enter the race.

Advertisement Some observers in Washington speculated that her announcement might elicit a stampede from rivals like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Trump's vice president, Mike Pence.

"Joe Biden's record is abysmal," Haley said of the current president, who has not officially announced his re-election campaign but is expected to run again.

"However, that shouldn't be a surprise. We have repeatedly been let down by the Washington establishment.
